Theatro Dentro participates at the Festival for its first time and presents Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, perhaps the most emblematic ancient drama of them all, the tragedy which examines the individual in respect of personal freedom, power, society and divine will.
The oracle at Delphi predicts that Thebes will be saved as soon as the person responsible for the death of King Laius is found and expelled from the city. So, Oedipus begins an investigation. The deeper he goes, the closer it brings him to the truth. Three stages, three Oedipuses in time. It damages them and declares the existence of death. Oedipus himself, who had saved Thebes from the scourge of the Sphinx, is now responsible for the moral pollution of the city. Truth becomes timeless, it transcends people’s lifetime, it overcomes death. Oedipus becomes one of us, and we become him.

The palaces of Thebes are full of supplicants begging King Oedipus to help the people. The plague that has decimated the city has alarmed the king himself, who has requested the advice of the oracle at Delphi. The oracle predicts that Thebes will be saved as soon as the person responsible for the death of King Laius is found and expelled from the city. So, Oedipus begins an investigation. The deeper he goes, the closer it brings him to the truth: Oedipus himself, who had saved Thebes from the scourge of the Sphinx, is now responsible for the moral pollution of the city. An old prophecy was shown to have been true. However much he tried to avoid his fate, his every action led him towards it. The only way open to him now is exile.
Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, perhaps the most iconic ancient Greek tragedy, belongs to the Theban cycle. According to the sources, it was performed for the first time in 425 BCE, during the Peloponnesian War, when plague had decimated the population of Athens. The Sophoclean tragedy examines the individual in respect of personal freedom, power, society and divine will.
Fate or free will? A key question on Oedipus the King by Sophocles. A question that tortures Oedipus’s psyche, but it does not dominate ultimately in the play. Seeking the truth at all costs overshadows this question, and sets a new one. What is for the best? To see the light of truth, even when we risk our destruction or staying in the safety of darkness? On archetypical Oedipus, catharsis can be achieved only when he knows the truth, and it takes time to get there. Time is a determining factor on the approach of Oedipus the King. It appears strongly in the riddle of the Sphinx, describing the man from the beginning of his life until the end. Three stages, three Oedipuses in time. It damages them and declares the existence of death. It also works as a “remedy” of his soul. It is time which matures his spirit to reach knowledge and the supreme element of truth, that on the one hand destroys him, but on the other exalts him. And there, time ceases to work. It stops. Truth becomes timeless, it transcends people’s lifetime, it overcomes death. Oedipus’s subtle psychoanalytic expressions, which have influenced science and the perception of human relationships, become facts to us. Oedipus becomes one of us, and we become him.

Theatro Dentro is a group which deals with research and work of art, as it is revealed through Theatre, Dance, Music, Energy Systems and any general expression of human creativity.
The purpose of the Group is to investigate the relationship between the Human and the Ideal. The means of this work is Art and its field is teamwork. According to this, the work includes objects that extend throughout the horizon of human expression, subjective (movement, sensation, reason) and objective (music & visual).
Correspondingly, the themes of work cover the vast range of the world’s “repertoire” in an attempt to assimilate the most essential elements that can be part of a Composition that exceeds time and local boundaries. From the Ancient Indian Dance to the European Contemporary dance, from the Traditional African dance to Contemporary Dance therapy, from the Ancient Tragedies to the Opera and Modern Music, from the Tragedies to Devised Theatre, from Kung Fu to the Physical Theatre, From NO Theater to the Italian Stage … the group tries to find a Post-Language in Art.
A post-Language in which all of the past experience is reconstructed in a way that responds to the needs of the present and of the future. In a form of a seed that can and is worth sowing, because it produces fruit. And each Seed always grows in two directions: towards the Earth – root and towards Heaven – tree.
Our whole work, having as its starting point, its aim and its material the man himself, aims beyond and far from a one-dimensional result -a performance- under the form of a “product”, towards the process of self-knowledge of the participants. A process and a self-awareness that exactly want to communicate through the “show”. Because it is in such a meeting that Art can happen. Art made of Man, for Man. When all those present collaborate and work together, instead of being divided into “performers and spectators”. And the goal of this Art is to restore man to His normal nature and to the Ideal.
